Music has always been ever-changing, particularly throughout the 1900's. However in the early 1990's in Britain, a new type of music began to take hold in the public eye. Britpop, (a type of alternative rock) came clashing into the world of music, disrupting what was a music chart steadily becoming submerged in American HipHop and R&B. Bands such as Oasis, Blur and Suede gave Britishness a fresh and new persona, and a fresh and new sound.
Flash-forward twenty or so years, and this genre of music has succeeded in not only surviving, but inspiring new genre's of music, such as Indie and it's many subgenres - popular types being Indie-Rock and Indie-Pop.
Inspired by the effect Britpop has had on the world of music, I decided to create a music video that honoured it's effects in a modern way. I also decided to honour one of the many unsung musicians in the world, Alex Day, an artist who shares his music on Youtube.
With technology expanding so quickly, artists and other forms of talents have began to share their music and work online, earning fanbases big enough for them to live successful lives, regardless of mainstream popularity and professional industries. Britpop was similar in the sense that it's sole purpose was to create havoc in it's refusal to conform to what was popular in the industry.

Background on Alex Day:
Essex born Alex Day is commonly known as 'Nerimon', a Youtube personality and singer/songwriter. He uploaded his first video onto Youtube back in 2006, and within a few short years earned himself a position as one of the top ten Youtubers in the UK. He has been a part of the band Chameleon Circuit, who have released two albums, and also Son's Of Admirals, who have released a successful single together. As a solo artist, Day has released two albums, two EP's (extended plays) and had 3 of his singles all reach the UK Top 40 hits - and all of this without any help from the music industry.
Day has been recognised as having a future-thinking way in regards to the foundations of becoming a successful artist. Even after gaining a positive response after releasing his several studio albums, Day has decided to release each of his songs singularly, with the view that Albums are dying out.
Since the introduction of Itunes (and similar products), artists who release a collection of songs at once aren't benefitting as much as they could. Firstly, it takes months to create an album, whereas if the artist(s) were to work on one single at a time, they would remain relevant and not keep their fans waiting. Also it is now common to listen to a preview of an album and select only a few songs to download, therefore making a large portion of the album fail in regards to sales.

Foster the People
Torches

Musicians and bands that fall into the music genre of Rock/Indie/Acoustic tend to go either of two ways in their visuality, whether that be in the videos they release, or their products and merchandise.

Freelance Whales
Weathervanes

Indie bands such as Foster the People and Freelance Whales tend to take a more artistic and retro approach when creating their image. Their CD covers are both unusual and fitting to the music they create.

Boy
Mutual Friends

Artists/Bands of similar genres will also take on an unusual image, however rather than be bold, they tend to take on a simple and minimalist approach. Usually selecting a colour scheme that consists of black and white, or earthy tones. For example, Indie-pop band Boy, and Soul-folk/acoustic artist Darren Criss.

When creating an Album cover to accompany my music video, I had to ensure that I kept to the stereotypical style seen with music from similar genres, but also stay true to what my audience would see within the music video, therefore keeping my products relevant and connected.

I also wanted to interpret some of Alex Day's methods of executing his image. By using the font seen on next to all of his products, and by brandishing the back of my CD cover with a record label he shares, I have succeeded in doing so.
